Aloha, Here is what I could come up with about PFLAG-Oahu. After so many computers that didn't always convert their files, I used what I had in Press Releases, old Newsletters, old newspaper articles, etc. to come up with this list.

It doesn't record all the phone calls with mothers and fathers wanting to talk about their Gay or Lesbian children; the sisters or brothers looking for support for their siblings; other relatives, friends and school counselors also searching for support and referrals. Nor does it reflect the calls and letters to various levels of the Board of Education regarding reports of gay bashing during school hours, on school campus. This is just a bird's eye view of what PFLAG-Oahu has done over the years. Does anyone remember the year we joined in with the Walk Around the Island for Social Justice, Marriage??? I remember the 'coffin' Mitch made for the event. Yes, it too was carried around the island!

Now, I'm working on a list of "To Do's" for 2012.

Registration Now Open For LGBT Youth Safety Net Conference

Registration is now open for Creating A Safety-Net For LGBT Youth, a conference that kicks off a statewide collaborative effort among youth services providers in social services, health, education and juvenile justice committed to assuring safety in services for Hawaii's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

The skills-building and coalition-building conference will be Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (click here for map) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This conference is for administrators and program staff. Conference registration fees are $35 per person and there is a neighbor island and student discounted rate of $25. There will be a buffet lunch, refreshments, information tables and free resource materials provided to all those who register for the conference. To register, click here.

Our friend Gene was gracious to send us this photo of our PFLAG-Oahu banner at the Pearl City Foodland. September is the month for the matching funds fun raiser by Foodland. You don't have to visit the Pearl City Foodland to make a donation, you may make a donation at any Foodland when you check out. Our code is #77861 that you choose at the Check Out location in your local store.

Remember Foodland is still one of the only locally owned grocery stores and they created this project to give back to the community. It's important that we support the stores that support us and their employees. Foodland is a union store. With unemployment still a big problem along with other issues, we need companies that respect their workers.

Our projects this year will be to contact school counselors to offer our support for students; contact school bands to invite them to participate with the HNL Pride Parade June 2, 2012; work on implementing the Hate Crimes Act in Hawaii for the benefit of the victims of Bullying incidence around the state and offer our support to Gay Straight Alliances in all levels of education. These efforts are in compliance of our regular advocacy, support and education mission statement.

From September 1-30, 2011, donations to PFLAG-Oahu (77861) as a Give Aloha participating organization will be accepted at checkout at all Foodland, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores in Hawaii.

Customers must use their Maika`I Card (which can be obtained free at checkout) to make a donation, and can donate up to a cumulative total of $249 per person, per organization. Donations exceeding $249 per person will not be matched. Donations made without a Maika`i Card will not be matched. Individuals must use their own Maika`i Card to make a donation. Multiple donations on a Maika`i Card exceeding $249 for the same organization will not be matched.

Foodland and the Western Union Foundation will match each donation up to a total of at least $250,000 for all organizations combined. If total customer donations exceed $250,000, the matching gift will be divided proportionately among all participating organizations.

Donations in the form of cash, check or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JTB) will be accepted. Donations must be made payable to Foodland, Sack N Save or Foodland Farms. Each year, Foodland offers the community a wonderful Matching Funds project for Non-Profits in Hawaii called Give Aloha.

PFLAG-Oahu has been a beneficary of this great opportunity and your generosity.

Each year we reach out to the community in many different ways to address the discrimination that hurts all our children. We have to remember that discrimination not only hurts those who are the ones are targets for ignorance of bigotry but the ones who perpetuate the discrimination. The more people discriminate, the more their psyche is damaged to the blindness that discrimination brings with it. The people don't see the damage they do to themselves and others in the hate that they foster.

One of our projects will be enforcing the Hate Crimes Act in Hawaii and Chapter 19 in our public schools. Bullying and the other faces of discrimination have to be addressed with re-newed vigor. All students deserve a save school environment.

LAST HB 444 Update with the 4-4-4 Campaign....

Aloha Defenders of Justice and Equality,

We have had some great press over the last couple of days.

Monday/Tuesday news was about how the Business community supports HB 444 through the Hawaii Business Roundtable letter. A packet was delivered to Gov. Lingle sending this message.

Wednesday/Thursday news was about how the people support HB 444. This was shown through the delivery of over 7,500 pieces through petitions, postcards and letters to Gov. Lingle’s Office. Along with the QMark Poll that shows the public over whelming supports Civil Unions. Both of these were done by representatives of Equality Hawai’i, GLBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG – Oahu and Pride Alliance Hawai’i.

Then the Honolulu Weekly dedicated their Cover Story to Gov. Lingle to ask her to sign HB 444 into law. As well as Civil Beats Editorial calling on Gov. Lingle to sign HB 444 into law.

This has truly been a community coming together to fight for a common goal that will benefit us all. We could not have done all this without your support – signing the petitions, writing the e-mails, making those calls and getting your friends and family to join us!

So with that in minds here are the last 4 things for the 4-4-4 Campaign:

Kailua's Independence Day Parade Staging Info 7/5/2010

Aloha all,

Here is the info for the Kailua Independence Day Parade. Map and vital info are HERE!

Our exact line-up location is Uilama St. (See map in the attached pdf file) PFLAG is Unit #32 out of 103 units. Carlisle for Mayor is in front of us and the Knights of Columbus are right behind us.

The parade route (Kainalu Dr.) will be shut down at 9:00 AM and we need everyone in place by 9:30 AM.

There is limited parking available at Kailua Intermediate School (end of the parade) and along the side streets. There will be a shuttle running from 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM but NO PETS are allowed on the shuttle. (See the rules in the pdf file for more info) There will be NO SHUTTLE service after the parade.

The parade starts at 10 AM.

We will have water.

Human Rights Campaign and Pride Alliance Hawaii will be bringing candy but feel free to bring more - everyone loves candy! This will be our 10th Year marching in the parade and we very rarely reach the end of the parade with candy for the kids and big kids. Yes there is a lot of eye candy along the parade route for everyone.

Do not forget sunscreen because this parade does get hot and sunny.

Since we are so close to the front of the parade you can march with all of us then at the last intersection (Kuulei Road) peel off and go back and walk with your favorite candidate. They will ALL be there.

It is Official - Time to Kick up into HIGH Gear!

Aloha all,

Well Gov. Lingle placed HB 444 on the POTENTIAL veto list today.

Yes we did expect this, so it was not a total shock all this does is it gives us another 14 days to reach Gov. Lingle and ask her to sign HB 444 into law. So to that end....

Every 4 days until July 4th we will be sending you a list of 4 different things you can do to help ensure that HB 444 becomes law. It is part of the 4-4-4 (4 Things U Can Do 4 Equality by July 4th) project. We are not expecting everyone to do everything on the list but we know people want things that they can do to help get HB 444 signed into law – so here is the first set of 4 –

Aloha!

We are now a couple of days away from the 20th Anniversary of the Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade and Celebration!

There has been a little change and that is we are starting the Parade from the Ala Wai Yacht Brokerage that is located at 1651 Ala Moana Blvd and we have included a map to help you locate it. It is right next the to the Hawaii Prince.

The only draw back from this change is that there is NO PARKING at this location. Only Parade vehicles will be allowed in. So you will need to either park at Magic Island and walk over or the better option is for drivers to drop off your passengers at the Ala Wai Yacht Brokerage and then park your car at Kapiolani Park and ride the PFLAG Trolley back to the Start of the Parade. The Trolley will leave Kapiolani Park right at 8:30 AM.

It is not too late to register your group or business to be in the Parade.

If you ride a motorcycle, crotchrocket or how ever you want to call it Dykes-on-bikes kick off the parade as they have for the previous 19 years.

We also have a Couples Unit being lead by one of our Couples Grand Marshal Kimi & Diane Racine.

Remember if you are an individual or just a group of friends there is no cost to walk in the parade, just like the Dykes-on-Bikes or couples units and you do not need to register. Just show-up and you are in!

Here is the TIMELINE for the Parade and Celebration on June 5th:

7:00 AM – Unit Check-in begins at the Ala Wai Yacht Brokerage

8:30 AM – Trolley leaves Kapiolani Park for the Start of the Parade

9:30 AM – All vehicles need to be in place

9:45 AM – Unit Check-in closes

10:00 AM – The 20th Anniversary Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade begins

11:30 AM – Honolulu LGBT Pride Celebration officially starts in Kapiolani Park around the Bandstand

We will have great entertainment, speakers, LGBT groups, food vendors, crafters and of course the Keiki Area!

6:00 PM – The 2010 Honolulu LGBT Pride Celebration ends

The 20th Annual Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade

Unit check begins at 7:00 AM at Ala Wai Yacht Brokerage 1651 Ala Moana BLVD (SEE Map it is a block from the original start location)

There is NO Parking at this location only vehicles in the parade will be allowed to enter the Staging Area. So you need to either park at Magic Island or better yet drop off your riders and park at Kapiolani Park and then the driver can ride the PFLAG trolley to the start of the parade. Trolley leaves Kapiolani Park at 8:30 AM - SHARP.

Everyone needs to be in place by 9:30 AM.

Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade starts at 10 AM sharp

The parade route follows Ala Moana Blvd to Kalakaua Ave. and ends at Kapiolani Park.

All money collected from parade fees are used for the support and promotion of the 2010 Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade.

Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade & Celebration on June 5th - UPDATE

Aloha!

With less than a week until the 20^th Annual Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade on June 5th and we just wanted to let you know about a couple of things that have come together over the past week.

But first we want to thank the Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation for putting on a GREAT Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival this weekend. We hope that you had time to catch at least one if not all of the films.

So back to the announcements – it was confirmed this week that the Democratic Party of Hawai'i will be joining us this year. Yes in the years since the creation of the GLBT Caucus the Democratic Party has marched under the GLBT Caucus banner but this year the Party is going to have its own contingent in the Parade. Yes the Pride Parade is for the LGBT community but we could have gotten to where we are today with out our allies, so this is a GREAT addition to the Parade. Every day the list of participants grows!

The Celebration following the Parade in Kapiolani has over 40 different vendors with everything from LGBT groups to local crafters to great Food Vendors and of course the Keiki area! Our entertainment line-up is being finalized as we speak and we are working to accommodate all the great talent and speakers that are clamoring to be a part of History!

So here is the time line for Saturday June 5^th –

Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade:

7:00 a.m. - Unit check-in begins at Magic Island

8:30 a.m. – PFLAG-Oahu trolley leaves Kapiolani Park to take participants and volunteers to Magic Island

9:30 a.m. – All vehicles need to be in place

9:45 a.m. – Unit check-in closes

10:00 a.m. – The 20^th Annual Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade begins!

Celebration:

6:30 a.m. – Vendor check-in begins

8:30 a.m. – PFLAG-Oahu trolley leaves Kapiolani Park to take participants and volunteers to Magic Island

11:00 a.m. – Music starts at the Kapiolani Bandstand

12:00 p.m.. – The official start of the Celebration!

We are three weeks away from the 20^th Annual Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade and Celebration (June 5^th). This promises to be the most dynamic and exciting Pride experience in Honolulu's history.

Things are coming along smoothly and we are getting more excited as each day passes. I know that we are not the only one's that are excited as we already received our Proclamation from the City and County of Honolulu declaring June 5^th as "Justice Means Equality – Ha'aheo" Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade Day. We hope that you are just excited about this year's activities! (See community listing below)

We do have a lot to Celebrate! this year so we hope that you will join us for a fun filled day!

The Honolulu LGBT Pride Parade will start promptly at 10 AM from Magic Island on June 5th.

We can not do this alone so we are looking for volunteers to help with the parade:

5 – People for the Color Guard – Ideally LGBT military affiliated (either retired or ex-military – it is beyond time to repeal DADT!)
4 – Banner holders (Parade & organizational Grand Marshal banner)
6 – Parade Monitors

If you would like to help out, please let us know which position you are most interested in.

Remember we have space for everyone that wants to be in your Parade. We are including the Parade application in this e-mail, please fill it out and mail, e-mail or fax it back to us.

Yes the "Dykes on Bikes" will kick off the parade as they have for the last 19 years. This year we are also inviting everyone that rides a motorcycle to join them!

We are also putting together a couples/family marching unit. So we are calling all couples and families to march with our couple Grand Marshal. And yes we will be announcing all the 2010 Grand Marshals shortly.

Following the Parade we will have the FREE Celebration in Kapiolani Park.

Fifteen years ago, Carolyn Golojuch and other O'ahu residents with gay or lesbian relatives formed an advocacy group to push for equal rights for their family members.

Over the ensuring years, they regularly lobbied the Legislature in the name of equal rights.

Yesterday, minutes after the House passed a controversial civil-unions bill, Golojuch was all smiles.

"I'm ecstatic," said Golojuch, with Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians and Gays. "Perseverance does work. When you're right, you cannot quit."

Amid cheers and tears, supporters of the bill, which now goes to Gov. Linda Lingle, hailed the 11th-hour passage as a historic step by the Legislature.

"I think it's a wonderful surprise that (legislators) moved to stand up for principles and family values," said Kuli'ou'ou resident Jo Chang of The Moms, a support group for parents of gay children. Chang was in the gallery as the House approved the bill.

Hawai'i has been wrestling with the divisive issue of same-sex marriage since the early '90s, longer than any other state. In 1993, the Hawai'i Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that said denying same-sex partners the right to marry violated their equal protection under the state Constitution.

It was the first time any state high court had taken such action.

Since then, attempts have been made regularly at the Legislature to expand the rights of gay couples, and many of those attempts faltered for lack of support. Yesterday's action was the first time a civil-unions bill giving same-sex couples the same rights and protections as married opposite-sex couples overcame bitter opposition.

"We've been waiting for this to happen for so long," said Ryan Prestoza, 25, a University of Hawai'i student who watched yesterday's vote. "It's overwhelming. It's going to take some time to sink in."

The state began grappling over same-sex marriages in 1991 after three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit because they were denied marriage licenses. That lawsuit resulted in the high court's decision two years later.

The issue made headlines again in 1997 when Hawai'i became the first state in the country to provide some spousal rights to gay partners.

Legislators passed a reciprocal beneficiary relationships bill, giving adults who were legally banned from marrying the right to register their reciprocal relationship with the state. Reciprocal benefits include inheritance rights, property rights, hospital visitation rights and other protections.

That same year, however, lawmakers approved a measure allowing the public to vote on a constitutional amendment on whether to grant the Legislature the power to reserve marriage for a man and a woman.

Hawai'i voters approved the amendment in 1998 by a 70-percent majority.

Even after the reciprocal benefits legislation was enacted, proponents of civil unions said that legislation didn't go far enough and continued to push for the expanded rights enjoyed by all other married couples.

Their efforts culminated in yesterday's House vote.

"I'm stunned, shocked, thrilled," said Kapolei resident Aaron Escobido-Ortiz, a business owner who was in the gallery watching the vote. "It could've gone either way, but they did the right thing. ... This bill isn't just for gays and lesbians. It's for Hawai'i's straight people as well."

UH student Chesley Burruss, 25, who also watched the vote, called the outcome amazing.

"I think it sends a really strong message that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people matter in Hawai'i," he said. "I think that's a really strong message."

Kat Brady of Citizens for Equal Rights likewise applauded the House action.

"This is a great day for justice," she said. "The Constitution is clear. All people are equal. And I'm overjoyed that couples who have been together for a long time will get the rights they deserve."

It will be one week to the day since the House Leadership (Say and Magaoay) did everything they could do to ensure that HB 444 (through an anonymous voice vote) would not pass this session. This is NOT just a gay issue – if they can do this to the Civil Unions bill when the entire State is watching, what will they do when not everyone is paying attention!

Starting at 3:00 - 4:00 PM (State Capitol)
HAND DELIVER “Thank You” notes to the Representatives for speaking up on our behalf. (We are looking for people to do this with their mouths duct taped a la "NO H8" campaign)

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM (State Capitol)
SIGN WAVING: in support of Civil Unions especially given that Lambda Legal and ACLU Hawaii will be filing a lawsuit against the State of Hawaii for Civil Unions.

5:30 PM – 6:30 PM (State Capitol)
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR DEMOCRACY

We ask everyone to wear black or at least a black armband and a rainbow lei and bring a flash light.
There will be speakers from the different groups supporting the event talking about what democracy meant to them and their organization.

We will also announce the launch of the 20*10 Campaign.

6:30 PM – 7:30 PM (State Capitol to Chinatown)
SILENT MARCH to Chinatown to hand out fliers calling on Say and Magaoay to revive democracy at the State Capitol and let HB 444 have its vote. Ending the march at the park next to the Hawaii Theatre (behind Indigo)

10-Year-Old Won't Pledge Allegiance To A Country That Discriminates Against Gays

From Huffington Post Via Queerty comes a story from the Arkansas Times about Will Phillips, an elementary school student who refuses to say the pledge of allegiance in school because of discrimination against gay people:

"I've always tried to analyze things because I want to be lawyer," Will said. "I really don't feel that there's currently liberty and justice for all."

After asking his parents whether it was against the law not to stand for the pledge, Will decided to do something. On Monday, Oct. 5, when the other kids in his class stood up to recite the pledge of allegiance, he remained sitting down. The class had a substitute teacher that week, a retired educator from the district, who knew Will's mother and grandmother. Though the substitute tried to make him stand up, he respectfully refused. He did it again the next day, and the next day.

A columnist for the Arkansas News has stood up for Phillips against his angry substitute teacher. Predictably, fellow students have taunted the kid and called him a "gaywad," but he says he doesn't see his quiet act of protest ending any time soon.

1) Watch the documentary "Outrage." From Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick comes OUTRAGE, a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. This is a great reminder of why we continue to work for equal rights and benefits for all our children.

2) Before the movie we will be discussing the upcoming holiday events - the PFLAG - Oahu Holiday Display at Honolulu Hale (construction and kick off)

3) Thanksgiving cards will be available for the 6 Seniors and 33 Representatives who supported equal rights for all our children during the 2009 Legislation Session. All that is needed is that you bring a note to include with the card or simply sign your name to the card. January is just around the corner and we are still working for liberty, justice and love. We have to have our mission front and center every day not just during the legislative session. It's called 'educate, educate, educate' about support, educate and advocate.

On October 11, there will be a National Equality March and Rally in Washington, D.C. to focus attention on the need for equal protection for lgbt people across the country. The DC events are being planned by Equality Across America - a network of LGBT grassroots organizers including Cleve Jones.

Many cities are planning their own events to observe the national march. For Honolulu, Pride Alliance is organizing a march around the State Capitol/Iolani Palace block followed by a tribute to the contributions made by and to the local LGBT community.

It is time to raise awareness in what we truly deserve; to be treated equal and not to be afraid to voice our concerns.

I went to the Candlelight Vigil last night (3-7-09) and was touched by the many who showed up.

My 10 yr. old son said, “Dad, I am so happy that people came out to support you ‘cause I know that one day you and James will be married legally. I love you both no matter what.”

How touching that this came out of the mouth of a child who stood in the rain side by side with his two dads and who is totally supportive of equal rights.

My son doesn’t understand it all but I hope that one day when he makes an equal rights choice that equality will be for everyone….

He is the future and we must pave the way for him to grow up without hate or prejudice.

ACLU Coalition needs your help

The American Civil Liberties Union is working with a coalition of groups to pass a comprehensive civil union bill in Hawaii – and we need your help.

Due to a deadlock in the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Government Operations (JGO), a comprehensive Civil Union Bill (H.B. 444, HD1) providing same-sex couples with full relationship protections and responsibilities is on the verge of demise. Unless the Senate votes to pull the bill from this Committee and hold a full Senate vote, the bill will not go forward. The fight is not over and this battle can be won, but only if Senate members hear from their LGBT constituents!

We're looking for lesbian and gay couples who are willing to share their stories about how they or their loved ones have been harmed because they have been denied basic protections afforded to other families. Real couples with real stories will help us convince the legislature to support civil unions.

NAACP Comes Out Against Prop 8

Throughout the Prop 8 fight last year, the California NAACP was a strong ally for marriage equality. Yesterday, the national NAACP came out strongly against Prop 8, as well.

From NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous (pictured):

“The NAACP’s mission is to help create a society where all Americans have equal protection and opportunity under the law,” said President Jealous. “Our Mission Statement calls for the ‘equality of rights of all persons.’ Prop. 8 strips same-sex couples of a fundamental freedom, as defined by the California State Supreme Court. In so doing, it poses a serious threat to all Americans. Prop. 8 is a discriminatory, unprecedented change to the California Constitution that, if allowed to stand, would undermine the very purpose of a constitution and courts - assuring equal protection and opportunity for all and safeguarding minorities from the tyranny of the majority.”

Specifically, the NAACP is urging the California Legislature to pass resolutions stating their objection to Prop 8 and urging the California Supreme Court to overturn it. Oral arguments in the case against Prop 8 will be heard March 5th. Stay tuned for more.

Equality needs your help

Aloha PFLAG Friends,

PFLAG-Oahu has been working for equal marriage rights since it's re-organization in 1995. 1998 saw Hawaii bringing civil rights to the national stage. While we are still working for equality, we have never given up.

Now we need your help. The Judiciary Committee of the Hawaii State split the six member committee. Two of the anti-equal rights senators have been unrelenting since 1998. Senator Gabbard was the founder of the Save Traditional Marriage in the 1990’s before he became a senator.

Below is a list of lawmakers who need to hear from you. Today the National NAACP issued an apology for the African Americans who voted for California’s Prop 8 which eliminated the right to marry for our children. Now the same people are out in force in Hawaii.

We need your help to educate our lawmakers. If you could email a letter of Support House Bill 444 HD 1 because…….(here you put your reason why you promote equality for our kids).

If you want to write a novel, do so as long as you can send your message in the next 24-36 hours. Time is so important. Please pass this message to your chapter members and friends.

SENATE PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY!

The Senate Committee on Judiciary and Government Operations will hear our Civil Unions Bill (HB444 HD1) at a public hearing on Tues., Feb. 24, at 9 a.m., in the auditorium of the State Capitol (415 South Beretania Street, Honolulu).

Testimony needs to be submitted by 4 p.m. the day prior to the hearing, however, we recommend that you send it in immediately with a cover indicating:

Testifier's name with position/title and organization (if applicable)
The measure number (HB 444 HD1)
The date and time of the hearing (Feb. 24 at 9 a.m.)
The Committee the comments are directed to (in this case, Senate Judiciary and Gov't Operations)
Testimony can be submitted in ONE of the following ways:

E-mail: For comments less than five pages in length, e-mail to JGOTestimony@Capitol.hawaii.gov
Web: if less than 4MB in size at http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/emailtestimony

The bill's next stop is the Judiciary panel in the Senate, where approval is uncertain

Coming after last week's four-hour committee hearing, the state House spent about 25 minutes debating a proposal on civil unions for same-sex couples before passing the measure by a vote of 33-17.

The proposal in House Bill 444 would make civil unions equivalent to traditional marriages in the eyes of the state.

Hawai`is parade is truly "the people's parade". September is the month to contribute to contribute to PFLAG O'ahu through the Foodland/Sack N Save Give Aloha Fundraiser.

"Customers must use their Maika'i Card to make a donation, and can donate up to a cumulative total of $249 per person, per organization. Donations exceeding $249 per person, per organization will not be matched. Donations made without a Maika`i Card will not be matched. Individuals must use their own Maika`i Card to make a donation. Multiple donations on a Maika`i Card exceeding $249 for the same organization will not be matched."

So, If you give $249 to give Aloha using the PFLAG ID# 77861, PFLAG O'ahu could theoretically receive $498 (or If you give $25, the amount received by PFLAG O'ahu could be $50, etc). WOW! Realistically, the matching amount will be less, but still much more than if you give directly to PFLAG O'ahu.

Don't delay! Hop on down to any Foodland or Sack N Save supermarket and sign up for a Maka'i card (fast, easy, fun!) and give a load of money to PFLAG O'ahu (and get some groceries to support our Foodland friends). Your contribution will support our mission.

SEPTEMBER! Give Aloha Fundraiser!

Give Aloha is an annual program through which Foodland directs its charitable giving to the organizations that are important to its customers. All Hawaii 501 (c)(3) organizations are invited to participate each year. During September, Maika`i customers are invited to make a donation of up to $249 (per person, per organization) at checkout to their favorite non-profit organization registered in Give Aloha. Foodland matches a portion of each donation. This year, Foodland and the Western Union Foundation will match up to a total of $300,000 for all organizations combined. Since the program began in 1999, a total of more than $10 million has been raised for the community.

July 4th Kailua Parade

The annual Kailua 4th of July Parade THIS FRIDAY. We will meet at 9:00 am to decorate. Our order in the parade is noted in the update below. Call 779-9078 if you have trouble finding our meeting place. The parade begins at 10 am, and we need a good crowd to continue to make our presence known for family advocacy. Bring the kids! Potluck to follow.

Parking passes will be distributed for the lot at Kailua Intermediate School or you can park on side streets near the school so you won't have to go far at the end of the parade. Gates will open at 7:30 am. There will be shuttle buses available to take you to your staging area from 7:30 am until 9:00 am. Everyone MUST be in their staging area no later than 9:00 am. Kainalu Drive will be closed at 9:00 am. Look for the PFLAG O'ahu group.

Here is the update from the Parade meeting:

1. Our position number is 47 out of something like 82.
2. Our staging location is Pukoa St., makai side; Pukoa is the second or so street in from the four-way stop at the end of the parade, near Kainalu Elementary where we were last year. Look for the end of the RAINBOW.
3. We must be in position by 9:00 am.
4. Parking at Kailua Intermediate School (at the end of the parade route) is on a first come, first served basis; shuttle buses will run from Kailua Intermediate to the staging locations from 8 until 9:00 am.

REMEMBER: Be nice to everyone; don’t throw things; don’t stop to shake hands; do use umbrellas, hats and sunscreen; and drink lots and lots of water.

AIDS Walk April 20th

We hope that your team will join us again at this year’s 17th annual Honolulu AIDS Walk on Sunday, April 20th to help raise funds for Life Foundation programs. The Honolulu AIDS Walk is the largest AIDS awareness event in Hawaii, which helps to bring the community together to show support for all of those who are infected with and affected by HIV in our beautiful islands.

Your efforts will support Life Foundation’s client services for HIV-positive men, women, and children, as well as HIV prevention programs like free HIV testing and education in the community to stop the spread of HIV.

A number of us (11?) from Hawai'i, including a gagglet of kids, are going on the Rosie Family Cruise to Mexico in two weeks. PFLAG-Oahu is proud to announce that this is their 12th year to march in the MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PARADE.

President Carolyn Golojuch says, “Marching for civil rights is important for our members. This year we march in memory of Martin Rice, John Palmer and John Lodge, long time friends and supporters of civil rights. We know there is so much left to do for civil rights so that all people, including our gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersexed children will one day soon live in freedom from discrimination. For this reason we continue to march for freedom and respect for all our children. ”

In keeping with the mission of support, advocacy and education, the parade provides PFLAG-Oahu an opportunity to address and continue the national work for equality in all areas of our lives. PFLAG-Oahu marches to encourage parents, families and friends to accept and stand up for the civil rights of all their children. It's a PARAAAAADE!

Dr. Martin Luther King Parade 1/21 8:30 am -- Just a short note about the Martin Luther King Parade, Monday, January 21, 2008. We'll be staging in the Magic Island parking lot at 8:30 am. The parade starts at 9 am. PFLAG O'ahu has leased a trolley. Riders are needed for the trolley and marchers are needed for the huge rainbow flag that leads our group. Please come early to assemble the walkers, marchers and the riders. Come early and help us decorate the trolley. It's a fun morning in the park and all the way down Kalakaua. More than a party--it's an opportunity to exercise our Freedom of Speech Rights that are a part of the US Constitution. Sometimes we become so used to parades and parties that we lose sight of the whys of what we do. Of course, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his courage, fortitude and insight in establishing civil rights but Freedom of Speech has made it possible to inform people about human rights for all. 1) John Lodge died on Jan. 6th, 2008. Many of you will remember him--a tall man with the most gorgeous white hair and gorgeous smile. I first met him in 1995 when PFLAG O'ahu was just a twinkle in our eyes.

I went to the Gay and Lesbian Center on University Ave. across from UH Manoa to talk about the possibility of starting a PFLAG here. He told me about how it had been started two previous times and how it was needed here. It seems calls would come in from parents but they wanted to talk to another parent and although John was a parent, he thought it should be a non-gay parent. He continued to encourage me and offered the long beige banner with PFLAG in black. He had had it made years before and kept it just in case. It was used in our very first demonstration in front of the hotel next to the Moana on Kalakaua.

Georgia's daughter, a student at UH Manoa heard about the horror of a gay-bashing video that was going to be shown by the "Christian" Coalition that Friday night. We were able to contact John even after the G & L Center was closed for the weekend and the banner was picked up at John's apartment. It was used a couple more times before we had the funds for a rainbow colored banner. We still have the beige and black banner.

John continued to support PFLAG O'ahu as we went through the affiliation with the National PFLAG office. He was very instrumental in the founding of our chapter because he believed in us. He left O'ahu for Thailand before we found out about he was leaving or he would have been given his award for having a vision from the beginning.

John was a gentle and very kind person. It was a delight to go to the Center when John would greet you with his wonderful smile and warm loving spirit. John you are missed. I just always thought you would return to Hawai'i. Peace on your journey, John. We love you.

2) John Palmer: John was the life partner of Kay Miller, the author of Talking It Over: Understanding Sexual Diversity. They were long time Hawai'i Residents. John Palmer died on December 17, 2007 at 2:30am. He was a true friend of PFLAG here and on the mainland after they left the islands. His wonderful smile and warm welcome are missed already as they use to come to Hawai'i in January before John's health made it impossible for the trip. John wrote his memoir in the last couple of years. He was a most interesting man. PFLAG needs more friends who understand the importance of love and justice like John did. John was very supportive of their son, Steve and his partner. John was never afraid to speak up in defense of our children. As silly as it sounds, some people don't think we need PFLAG O'ahu because parents are just supposed to love their children. Unfortunately, not all parents are able to show their love for all their children and this is where PFLAG O'ahu comes in with information, advocacy and support. We need more John Palmers.

Just a reminder that PFLAG-Oahu will again be part of Honolulu City Lights.

We were one of the 4 winners of the city lottery. Only 4 non-profits entered the lottery.

The Life Foundation entered for the 1st time that I know of and won a space also!!!

PFLAG-Oahu will be hosting a paint party on Sat 11/17 at 9am at our house. All help is appreciated.

Set up will be Sat 11/24. This is the Saturday during the Thanksgiving weekend. The weekend right before the Official Opening of HNL City Lights on 12/1.

Let us know if you will be able to help out either 11/17 or 11/24. Either day would be appreciated.

October Is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WHAT IS THE LESBIAN BREAST CANCER PROJECT?

The goal of the project is to provide support for lesbians with breast cancer. This support will manifest itself in several ways. One, supports groups will be organized to provide direct support to lesbians, their partners and families as they go through the cancer treatment process. Second, health care providers will be provided information about the project to give to their patients. Third, we are organizing a Lesbian Health Conference for the fall.

WHO IS DOING THIS PROJECT?

The Aloha Pride Center, (formerly The Center-Hawaii) received a grant from the Hawaii Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The project manager is Margaret Mann, a two time breast cancer survivor and former board member of the Aloha Pride Center. She also is a former employee and board member of the Mautner Project for Lesbian Health in Washington, DC.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

If you are currently in treatment, join the support group. If you are a survivor, join the Survivor's Committee. If you are a health care provider, join the Health Care Provider's Committee. If you are just an interested party, volunteer to help plan the Lesbian Health Conference.

I HAVE JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER, WHO CAN I CONTACT? WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME?

Call Margaret Mann, early in your process. She can provide you with support, information and referrals to alternative/supplemental health care providers. She can put you in touch with others who are going through the same thing or went through the same thing some time ago.

WHY DO WE NEED A BREAST CANCER PROJECT FOR LESBIANS?

It's true that there are number of breast cancer support groups sponsored by hospitals, and cancer societies. It is also true that lesbians get the same sort of breast cancer as everyone else. The difficulty is in getting proper support. If a lesbian goes to a straight breast cancer support group she will either have to come out to the group or keep a significant part of her life hidden. The lesbian may find herself in the position of having to "educate" the group about what is like to be a lesbian during a time that is difficult enough already or she may have to zip her lip as others talk about their husbands. The straight group may not be much help to a lesbian who is agonizing over whether to come out to her doctor or to her parents so they will include her partner in all that is going on. A straight group might not be much help to a lesbian whose partner has left her, claiming she is unable to deal with potentially deadly illness. A straight group might not be able to assist a lesbian with finding out how to get included on her partner's health insurance policy. All these reasons and more make it imperative to create a safe space for lesbians dealing with breast cancer.

Program Information:

From Sept. 1 - 30, donations to Give Aloha participating organizations will be accepted at checkout at all Foodland and Sack N Save stores statewide.

Customers must use their Maika‘i Card to make a donation, and can donate up to a cumulative total of $249 per person, per organization. Donations exceeding $249 per person, per organization will not be matched. Donations made without a Maika‘i Card will not be matched. Individuals must use their own Maika`i Card to make a donation. Multiple donations on a Maika`i Card exceeding $249 for the same organization will not be matched.

Customers who do not have a Maika‘i Card may request one at checkout. Only one Maika'i Card will be issued per person.
Foodland and the Western Union Foundation will match each donation up to a total of $285,000 for all organizations combined. If total customer donations exceed $285,000, the matching gift will be divided proportionately among all participating organizations.

Donations in the form of cash, check or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JTB) will be accepted. Donations must be made payable to Foodland or Sack N Save.

The donation amount and name of the organization will appear on the customer’s receipt.

Donor names will not be released to organizations.
